GOD, RELIGION AND LIFE

Values and Attitudes – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • be open to different ways that Catholics express their relationship with God
  • be aware of God’s creativity experienced in human activity

Knowledge – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • identify rites and cultural expressions of the Catholic Church
  • describe how God is active in all creation

Skills – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • demonstrate significant ways Catholics relate to God
  • identify a range of expressions of God’s presence in the world

SCRIPTURE AND JESUS

Values and Attitudes – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • appreciate the vitality and potential of narratives, events and stories and the variety of books, people and messages contained in the Scriptures
  • appreciate the regional diversity of Israel at the time of Jesus, and differences in customs and social groups

Knowledge – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • describe the nature of narratives, events and stories and the structure of the Bible
  • identify the geography, customs and social groups at the time of Jesus

Skills – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • locate and interact with narratives, events and stories and passages in the Old and New Testaments
  • analyse stories about Jesus in terms of their cultural and historical background

THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Values and Attitudes – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • value the variety of practices, activities and people in the Church
  • be aware of the commitment and vision of the men and women in the early Christian communities

Knowledge – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • describe the range of activities and people involved in ministry in the Catholic Church
  • describe important events and personalities of the early Christian communities

Skills – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • explore possible ways of being actively involved in the mission of the Church
  • use historical sources to interpret early Church history

PRAYER, LITURGY AND SACRAMENTS

Values and Attitudes – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • be open to the meaning and significance of the Eucharist
  • value those signs, symbols and rituals which guide and enrich their own and other people’s lives

Knowledge – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • describe the development, structure and significance of the Eucharist
  • describe sign, symbol and ritual, the nature of the sacraments, and rituals associated with the sacraments of initiation

Skills – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • analyse elements of the Eucharist and its place as the central focus of worship for Catholics
  • classify examples of sign, symbol, ritual and sacrament

THE MORAL LIFE

Values and Attitudes – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • appreciate the many  influences that affect moral decision-making
  • value the relevance of the teachings of Jesus to contemporary society and life experiences

Knowledge – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • identify the various aspects in the formation of Christian ideals and decisions
  • identify ways in which Christians live lives of discipleship in accordance with the ideals and values of Jesus

Skills – It is intended that the students will be able to:

  • assess the extent to which moral character has an impact on the process of making choices
  • apply the teachings and ideals of Jesus to contemporary life situations

Year 7

GOD, RELIGION AND LIFE

  • God is the creator of all things and we should thank him for creation.
  • Human beings are made in God’s image and likeness and are meant to build God’s reign on earth and be with God forever in heaven.
  • God gives each person gifts to use to bring about his reign on earth.
  • God made humans stewards of creation with the responsibility to care for what he has made
  • We need to respect human life at all times

THE SCRIPTURES AND JESUS

  • The Word of God, in the Scriptures and the Tradition of the Church, has been inspired by the Holy Spirit
  • The New Testament tells us about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Old Testament times were a period of preparation for the coming of Jesus.
  • Moses was one of the greatest leaders of the Hebrew people

THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

  • A parish is a community of Christian faithful entrusted to a priest/pastor under the authority of the diocesan bishop.
  • Each member of the parish has a role within the life of the community.
  • The parish community is to encourage each of its members to fully live out Christ’s saving teachings, especially through the celebration of the Sunday liturgy.

PRAYER, LITURGY AND THE SACRAMENTS

  • Following Christ entails living a moral life of doing good and avoiding evil.
  • Recognise the importance of having values such as the Ten Commandments
  • The Church helps Christians to develop an informed conscience.
  • Freedom is a gift from God to be used to worship him and love what is good.
  • We  are called to love, respect, show compassion, mercy and forgiveness to everyone we meet, as these are desired by all.

  • God loves each of us and wants us to be in communion with him in this life and in the life to come.
  • If we love and follow Jesus in this life we can be with him forever in heaven.
  • Our choices in this life determine where we spend eternity.
  • If there are imperfections at the time of death we will spend time in Purgatory for purification. After our life on earth comes to an end we will have to account for what we have done, good or bad, before Jesus.

THE SCRIPTURES AND JESUS

  • Jesus Christ is the central figure of importance for all Christians.
  • Jesus’ influence has spread to almost every part of the world.
  • We can influence others to follow Christ.
  • The parables teach us a great deal about Christian living and what Jesus expects of his followers.
  • The parables also teach about God’s reign on earth and what the Kingdom of God is like.

THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

  • The early Church spread, firstly by the work of the Apostles and their co-workers and then by those who followed after them.
  • St. Peter played an important part in the life of the early Church.
  • St. Paul wrote various letters to the early Church communities and to individuals.
  • The early Christians experienced persecution and martyrdom.
  • Some of the ministries and works that exist in the Church, include consecrated life and the ordained ministry.

PRAYER, LITURGY AND THE SACRAMENTS

  • We are called to love and serve God and each other in our family life, the Church, the work/school place and in society.
  • Christians can assist each other through their prayers, penances and good works.
  • Each of us determines how we will spend eternity through the choices we freely make while we are alive.
  • Through sin we separate ourselves from God.

THE MORAL LIFE
